What we see in County Durham

People come to us about Listed Building Joinery in County Durham once the cheap option has already failed. You are mostly dealing with colliery terraces, Georgian Durham city stock and Pennine stone housing around here, so openings vary more than people expect. Locally you are contending with cold upland winters with heavy rainfall, so frost and saturation damage on unmaintained painted softwood is the fault we are called out to. Where we put the effort is replication accurate enough to satisfy a like-for-like condition.

Each opening is recorded individually, since a terrace of identical houses rarely is. Ask us for a figure and you will get one, with the lead time stated alongside it.

A local consideration we always raise: Durham's cathedral setting carries World Heritage-level design scrutiny.

County Durham questions

Do you cover County Durham?

Yes. We cover the whole of County Durham including Durham, Darlington, Hartlepool, Stockton-on-Tees and the surrounding villages. Durham's cathedral setting carries World Heritage-level design scrutiny. Because cold upland winters with heavy rainfall, we allow for it at survey stage rather than discovering it on the day.

Do you take a deposit?

Not before the measured survey. A deposit is only requested once the survey is complete and you have approved the final schedule and price.

What if the opening is out of square?

Most older openings are. The survey records the actual dimensions at several points and the unit is manufactured to suit, which is the main reason we survey rather than work from the sizes given over the phone.

What guarantee do you provide?

Ten years on workmanship, covering manufacture and the factory-applied finish. Where we install, the installation is covered too. It is issued in writing with the handover paperwork.

Can you price from drawings?

Yes. Send a drawing set or a schedule and we will price against it. If anything is ambiguous we will query it before quoting rather than assume and reprice later.

Do you fit, or supply only?

Both. Supply-only is common for trade and contractor clients. For private clients we usually recommend supply and fit, because responsibility for the fit and the finish then sits in one place.
